Surprisingly most shoplifters are “amateurs”. There is no simple way to tell if a customer is capable of theft. The surest way to discourage shoplifting is to have an active deterrent in place. Make it difficult to walk out of a store without paying for merchandise, and you have helped prevent a problem before it occurs. The average customer will not notice an EAS systems’ pedestal standing at the front door, the hard tags on merchandise, or the fact that the cashier has to scan and deactivate an item at the point of sale, but a shoplifter will. It is called active deterrence, and it works.
