The new conference provided some surprising opportunities
I love surprises. And last week’s ReTec conference served up plenty.
I knew it would be a good opportunity to kickstart dialogue with potential new customers. But I could never have predicted some of the conversations we had on the day.
We found ourselves talking with major retailers who, on the face of it, had no requirement for our source tagging solutions. Yet there they were, wanting to discuss a whole range of interesting applications and new uses for our products. It certainly got our mental cogs whirring!
For me, that’s one of the reasons why shows like ReTec are so great. They open up new avenues and exciting possibilities that may never have even been on your radar.
Of course, I shouldn’t have been surprised. It happens all the time in the business world. In fact, many of the world’s biggest brands were originally designed for one purpose only to be appropriated for something quite different.
Coca Cola started out as a cure for morphine addiction. WD-40 was used for lubricating unused nuclear missiles in the Cold War. And who’d have thought bubble wrap was originally marketed as wallpaper?!
Even our very own RF-enabled evidence labels evolved from a different market…
As a concept, evidence labels have been around for decades. Originally designed for North American retailers, they’re essentially printed labels containing a specific type of acetate solution that damages the product’s packaging if you try and remove it (thereby lowering the resale value). The labels are also serialised to make it easier for stolen items to be repatriated to the store from where it was taken.
Although highly effective, evidence labels are pretty basic. They serve the American market well but there’s certainly no sophisticated tech involved. Until now…
At All-Tag® , we’re beginning to integrate this solution with our trusted RF label technology to provide an extra level of deterrent for UK retailers – and with great effect. The results have been astonishing. Stores using our RF-enabled evidence labels on household goods have seen shrink fall by 15- 16%.
Even a major police force has asked to trial the product as part of their efforts to monitor the movement of stolen goods across the area. It just goes to show how innovation can have unintended (and often surprising) consequences…
Of course, we’ve got no plans to stop with RFenabled labels. We’re also looking at how we can repurpose some of our other established products with state-of-the-art technology to enhance customer interaction and brand awareness.
For me, it’s about taking an existing item and thinking, “What else can I do with that?” “What small adjustments can we make to address new markets?” It’s safe to say that there are plenty of exciting developments in the pipeline.
So, watch this space… and roll on ReTec 2025!
